Kim Pare, BC, CPA, CMA
Professionally, I am currently Vice President of Human Resources for The Descartes Systems Group Inc., an international logistics technology company with offices in over 20 countries. I have an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from McMaster University and an accounting designation as a CPA, CMA.
Personally I have been married for 36 years and have two children. My son Chris is 32 years old and my daughter Kaitlyn who would have been 27 years old on March 2, 2017. She unfortunately passed away from an accidental drug overdose 2 weeks after her 24th birthday. Since my daughters passing my wife and I decided to talk about mental health and addiction to overcome the stigma. When you are in the throws of addiction, whether as the addict or the family involved, there is a stigma attached to the addiction that almost forces you to keep it quiet which in retrospect was not the best thing to do. So from the moment my daughter died, including in the eulogy we recorded for her funeral, we have been outspoken about ending the stigma. To date we have talked participated on panel discussions setup by bereaved families of Southwestern Ontario, at Nar-Anon meetings to families who have loved ones suffering from the illness of addiction, at Addiction Awareness Day days in both Hamilton and Oakville, my wife spoke at the Ontario Government buildings during a FED-UP rally, I have spoke at two girls high school in Toronto as part of their mental health awareness week and to a classroom of young adults who have suffered from mental health and addiction at Georgian College. We are also actively involved with Wayside House, an addiction and recovery housing center in Hamilton, both in a support capacity and in fund raisings initiatives we organized ourselves.
