Dance Science and Somatics Educators' (DSSE) Conference Report
August 5-7, 2016
University of Utah--Salt Lake City, UT

The Dance Science and Somatics Educators’ Conference (formerly Dance Kinesiology Teachers) was held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Aug 5-7, 2016.  Over 40 educators and researchers from across the US and Mexico gathered at this semi-annual forum to share a range of teaching and research perspectives aimed at enhancing dance training through various approaches to dance science and somatic principles and practices. Special guest and honoree, Irene Dowd, gave a half-day workshop “Teaching Strategies for Making Anatomy Functional for Dancers.” Other presenters offered a diverse array of workshops across the science and somatics spectrum including: Thai massage, cyber anatomy, guided imagery for young children, gluteal activation in dance training, developing a culture of wellness in dance, and several experiential sessions that shared individual approaches to teaching and research. DSSE seeks to help educators share teaching strategies, educational resources and meet other educators integrating dance with science and somatics.
