PAMA at Inaugural Canadian Meeting

On September 28th teachers, dance medicine clinicians, and researchers held a symposium at the Artists’ Health Centre in Toronto, Canada. The 70 attendees heard presentations from local experts.  Dr James Carson highlighted  the need for dance medicine specialists. Craig Jacobs, researcher from the University of Toronto spoke on developing a dancer-based definition of an injury. Dr Lynda Mainwaring, who has published frequently in the PAMA journal talked about international research in dance science and Karen Bowes-Sewell a teacher at York University presented an integrated approach to dance training and science.

Physiotherapy members of PAMA, Joanna Speller of the National Ballet School and Ginette Hamel of the National Ballet stimulated the audience with their practical demonstrations. Joanna Speller worked with a member of the National Ballet and using acupuncture points and electrical stimulation was able to demonstrate significant improvement. Through their questions the audience showed considerable interest in these two sessions.

The sessions were moderated by two PAMA members: Donna Krasnow and Bonnie Robson. The afternoon discussion focused on the future of dance medicine and science in Ontario. It was decided to hold another meeting at the same time in 2009. The Artists’ Health Centre generously offered to host the next meeting and Dr James Carson was chosen to lead the team developing the organization.

PAMA sent greetings and best wishes for the initial meeting through Bonnie Robson. The PAMA triptych was on display and all the information packages were distributed.

Individuals wishing further information about this beginning organization are encouraged to contact Dr. Carson at James.Carson@utoronto.ca .
